In its sophomore year, Tamara Thomas Dance is presenting its second evenining of work titled, STOLEN FROM AFRICA: NARRATIVES OF THE CONTEMPORARILY ENSLAVED

The program includes an array of newly created choreography by Tamara Thomas.  Performances on both evenings will integrate hip-hop, Guinea Dance, Sabar, Jamaican folk, Umfundalai and Modern Dance into a rich tapestry of social commentary and experiences of movement.

Pieces like “Mentalities” and “P.T.S.D” will engage reinterpreted traditional folk forms, juxtaposed against sounds of blues and spoken word.  The theme of the night explores the ways in which African people experience and project the politics of a colonial legacy.   “This is a pressing discussion that must be had in our homes and at our gatherings,” Thomas insists.

A conversation will follow each show, allowing the audience to address questions about the content presented, and granting insight into the creative process from the choreographer and dancers.

All indications suggest that ‘Stolen from Africa’ promises to be refreshing and vital to the enrichment of Jamaica’s ‘dancescape.’

Tickets for Friday, July 4 and Saturday July 5 are $1,000.
